The Day I Learned to Fix a Bike
A first-person story about helping at a community centre and gaining confidence while repairing a bicycle.
Last Saturday I decided to volunteer at the community centre near my flat. When I arrived, the hall was full of people carrying old bikes and boxes of tools.A woman called Marta welcomed me and explained that it was a free bike-repair morning. Marta introduced me to Leon, an older volunteer with oil on his hands and a calm smile. He showed me how to check the tyres and told me to listen for a soft hissing sound. A few minutes later, we found a small hole in a boy’s front tyre. Inside it there were tiny patches, glue, and a piece of sandpaper, and Leon explained what each thing was for. When we pumped air back in, the tyre stayed hard, and the boy grinned at me as if I had done magic. On my way home I realised that one morning of volunteering had made me feel more confident, and I promised myself to go back next month.
