My First Season in the Field

Five early-career scientists describe their first research trip

Ana Ribeiro, marine biologist

I spent seven weeks on a research ship in the Southern Ocean, collecting samples of krill. The science itself went more or less to plan, and the crew were extraordinarily good at keeping the equipment working in conditions I can only describe as hostile. What nobody had warned me about was the lack of space. I shared a cabin the size of a wardrobe with a chemist who worked nights while I worked days, so one of us was always trying to sleep while the other was trying to be quiet. You could not go for a walk or shut a door on anyone, and every small irritation was magnified. By week four, the way a colleague stirred his tea could put me in a bad mood for an hour. Seasickness and the cold were nothing by comparison. And yet I would go back tomorrow. One night near the end of the voyage, I went out on deck at about two in the morning and the whole sky was moving with green light. I stood there until I could no longer feel my hands. No photograph I have seen since comes close.
