When Fieldwork Goes Wrong

Five field researchers describe a time when their fieldwork went badly wrong

Dr Saoirse Kinsella, marine ecologist

We were forty kilometres off the coast, counting dolphins from a small research boat, when the engine coughed and died. It didn’t take long to work out why: we’d run out of fuel. Checking the tank before we left harbour was my job, and I’d been so busy loading cameras that I simply hadn’t done it. There’s no way to make that sound better than it is. We drifted for six hours before a pair of fishermen from the nearest village spotted us, shared their own fuel and then insisted on escorting us all the way back to port. They wouldn’t accept any payment. I sent them a framed photograph of the dolphins we’d seen that morning, which felt like a very small thank-you.
