Write for an Academic Discussion

Write at least 100 words.

Artificial intelligence is increasingly being used in healthcare to assist with diagnosis, treatment recommendations, and patient monitoring. Some medical professionals welcome AI as a tool that can improve accuracy and efficiency, while others worry about the risks of relying on algorithms for decisions that affect human lives. Do you think AI should play a significant role in healthcare decision-making? Why or why not? Use specific reasons and examples to support your view, and respond to the ideas in the posts below.

Student A

I believe AI should play a significant role in healthcare because it can process enormous amounts of medical data far more quickly and accurately than any human doctor. For example, AI systems have already shown the ability to detect certain cancers in medical images with higher accuracy than experienced radiologists. By assisting with diagnosis, AI can help doctors catch diseases earlier and reduce the number of missed diagnoses. This is especially important in regions where there are not enough specialists to serve the population.

Student B

While AI has potential in healthcare, I think we need to be very cautious about giving it a significant role in medical decisions. Algorithms are only as good as the data they are trained on, and if that data contains biases, the AI will produce biased recommendations that could harm certain patient groups. Moreover, healthcare involves complex emotional and ethical considerations that machines simply cannot understand. A doctor needs to consider a patient's personal values, family situation, and quality of life, which are factors that an algorithm cannot weigh appropriately.
