Most of us own phones, laptops, and other devices that are difficult to fix when they break. Manufacturers often glue batteries in place, sell spare parts only to their own repair shops, or use software that blocks parts from other suppliers. Some governments are now considering laws that would require companies to sell parts and repair manuals to anyone. Do you think governments should require manufacturers to make their products easier for consumers and independent shops to repair? Why or why not?
Yes. When my laptop's battery stopped working, the company told me a repair would cost almost as much as a new computer, so I bought a new one. That is bad for my wallet and terrible for the environment, because millions of devices end up in landfills when they could easily be fixed.
I understand the frustration, but I think these laws could cause problems. Modern phones are thin and waterproof partly because their parts are glued together. If manufacturers are forced to design for easy repair, devices may become heavier and more expensive. Also, a repair done badly by an untrained person could be dangerous, especially with batteries.
